The AM-15M416’s M4-contour barrel and light weight makes it an ideal patrol carbine. It also features a RF85 treatment that reduces friction without the need for any lubricant. Primary Arm’s Micro Dot (Gen 2) and their Ultimate Weapon Light was mounted to the carbine.
The AM-15 rifle tested proved to be utterly reliable and more than accurate, and all without the need for lubrication.
Although the test rifle came with a 15” barrel and a welded-on flash suppressor, current variants feature a 16” barrel with a non-welded muzzle device.
The upper receiver of the AM-15 features a flat top with an integral strip of Picatinny rail, which makes mounting an optic a breeze. Externally, the AM-15 looks like any other traditional AR, with familiar controls for anyone who has operated a similarly configured rifle. It is the nature of the coating that truly sets it apart.

Accuracy with the Armalite AR-180 was more than acceptable, with the open sights producing 1- to 2-inch groups at 50 yards with the ammunition tested.
Ultimately, despite the AR-180’s positive features, the design was not widely adopted or popular with the public.
AR-18/180 magazines are almost indistinguishable from the more common AR-15/M16 magazines. The two on the left show the slot on the right side, indicating a 45-round and 20-round AR-18/180 magazine next to a 30-round AR-15/M16 magazine.
The AR-180 was originally produced in Armalite’s Costa Mesa plant from 1969 to 1972 before moving to Japan’s Howa Manufacturing from 1972 to 1974 and eventually to Sterling Armaments in the UK from 1976 to the mid-1980s.
The AR-180 dispensed with elevated carry handle with sights located closer to the action.

HK’s MR556A1, shown here with the SureFire M900A vertical foregrip weapon light and an Aimpoint PRO with a 3XMag optic, features the same ultra-reliable gas piston system used by US Special Forces in the HK416, delivering premium performance in a patrol rifle.
The polymer dust cover on the MR556 is both quieter and impervious to corrosion while the captive takedown screw at the rear of the handguard makes its removal extremely easy.
The rubber butt pad on the MR556 stock twists off to reveal an internal storage area for batteries and other equipment. This area also secures the disassembly tool.
HK retained all of the familiar fire control systems but added an extended latch ambidextrous tactical charging handle. Note the spring-loaded takedown pins, which require the use of a special tool to disassemble the rifle.

The Del-Ton TRX features Troy Industries’ TRX Extreme Battle Rail forend, Battle Sights, Battle Ax CQB stock and BattleMag (although any standard AR/M16 magazine as shown will work). Shown equipped with an EOTech 552 HWS combat optic with integrated Laser Devices EOLAD-2 green laser pointer and SureFire M720V Raid Weaponlight.
The Battle Ax stock features a large amount of storage space for cleaning kits, spare parts, batteries, etc., and a sturdy steel buttplate.

Samson MFG has been manufacturing sights, rails and accessories for the AR15 family of weapons for years, but the Samson Evolution rail series seems to stand out from its siblings. Starting with the rail itself, the Evo 9-EX is a 9.2 ounce tube style rail made of 6010 Aluminum which extends past the front sight base (FSB) of a midlength gas system and secures itself via anti-rotation tabs and thermal bushings which lock on the stock barrel nut. Installation of the rail is easy, and the video shown below walks you through the entire process. The other option is to use it on a carbine gas system barrel like we did above, and drop on a folding front sight block to fill the space. The cut out rail section also allows for piston systems to be used, such as the Adams Arms piston kits.

S.A.O.D.’s shorty 6.8mm SPC upper comes with the customary gas block, and uses a direct-impingement gas system, without the need for a piston system. While conventional wisdom suggests anything short should have a piston in it, this 10.5″ upper did not suffer from using the traditional arrangement.
