A NY-based Chinese-national artist recently created an impressive daylight pyrotechnic display using 8,000 anti-missile countermeasure shells.

It seems like an easy way to send money up in smoke. But a fireworks exhibit that took place in broad daylight in Doha, Qatar has impressed art lovers. Black Ceremony is the work of Cai Guo-Qiang, a Chinese national based in New York City and the world’s foremost gunpowder artist.
It kicked off his new exhibit at the Arab Museum of Modern Art in the Qatari capital.
And while a daytime fireworks display may seem an odd choice, the use of pastel-coloured and black smoke made it a stand-out performance.
Cai, who dazzled millions with his fireworks display at the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics, collaborated with the Grucci family, behind the 4th of July firework in New York City, for the project.
The cost hasn’t been revealed, but it was covered by the Qatar Museam Authority.
And as the fastest growing economy in the world with a GDP per capita of around $101,000, spending money on a daytime fireworks exhibit was no gamble for Qatar.
Mayassa Bint Hamad al Thani, from the museum, said: ‘I thought it was spectacular. We were just talking about a second series of gunpowder so for those who missed it there will be another opportunity.’

Another gas gun soon to be released by Tokyo Marui is the HK45
Gun History
Developed from the start to be a defensive handgun, the HK45 Compact will easily fit the requirements for a concealed carry handgun. With an overall length of 7.2 inches, height of 5.06 inches and a width of 1.14 inches, this gun is a true compact but not a sub-compact. Like the USP, the HK45C can be purchased with any of 10 trigger systems, but this gun came with (at my request) the LEM (Law Enforcement Modification) trigger that offers a short length, hammer-fired, double-action-only (DAO) mechanism that’s easy to train with and shoot.
The LEM is my preferred action due to its simplicity and ease of use. Other variants offer decock and safety levers for both right- and left-hand shooters. Since the HK45C comes standard with an enlarged, contoured, ambidextrous magazine release as well as slide lock levers on both sides of the gun, the LEM makes this a true “everyman’s” pistol.
To offer the power of the .45 cartridge in a compact as well as controllable package, HK integrated a very effective recoil reduction system into the pistol’s design. This system can potentially reduce as much as 30 percent of the gun’s felt recoil, an important feature for rapid follow-up shots! While none of us likes to think that we will miss, it can happen, especially during a gunfight. Helping shooters get back on target fast is a desirable feature.
Both the HK45C and its big brother, the HK45 are rated for +P ammo and offer a service life of at least 20,000 rounds. Both pistols also have polygonal rifling in the barrel as well as a rubber O-ring at the muzzle for increased slide-to-barrel lock, which increases accuracy, velocity and service life. For those agencies or individuals that have special needs, a threaded barrel can be added for the addition of a suppressor.

New Russian TsKIB ASh-12 .50 Cal (12.7x55mm) Bullpup Rifle
TsKIB SOO, a subsidiary of KBP (Instrument Design Bureau), have developed a new bullpup rifle called the ASh-12. It is chambered in a new family of 12.7x55mm cartridges they developed for the rifle.
The ASh-12 Rifle
The 12.7x55mm is a thumper of a cartridge. It is similar in size, and probably power, to the .50 Beowulf. To help mitigate recoil, the ASh-12 is fitted with a large two-baffle muzzle brake. The 12.7x55mm assault rifle cartridge is based on the 12.7x55mm subsonic rifle cartridge (similar to the .500 Whisper). I do not believe an assault rifle chambered in 12.7x55mm would be able to chamber the much longer 12.7x55mm suppressed rifle cartridge. TsKIB SOO have developed a FMJ, soft-point, lead and armour piercing loads for the 12.7x55mm assault rifle cartridge.

A-TACS FG Camo

Ever since the launch of the original A-TACS Camo Pattern, people have been asking for a green variant of the pattern. The easy answer would have been to create a simple re-color of the existing pattern and release it as a green variant. Taking that approach may have been easier and faster however, it would not have been the correct way to create an effective temperate climate pattern. The characteristic environmental elements and shapes found in greener, more temperate settings needed to be addressed.
The answer was found in the creation of an entirely new pattern based on the A-TACS Camo’s unique “pattern within a pattern” concept. The addition of simulated depth was also necessary in order to add visual disruption to further break up the human silhouette.
After over a year of development and input of countless tactical professionals, we are proud to introduce A-TACS FG (Foliage/Green) Camo. Utilizing numerous shades of green sampled directly from a variety of forested and transitional terrain elements combined with various shades of earth, A-TACS FG Camo was developed to be effective in a wide range of temperate environments. As with the original A-TACS AU (Arid/Urban) Camo pattern, the organic pixels in the micro patterns are grouped into larger, more defined “macro” shapes creating larger more defined patterns. The larger organic shapes and strategically placed shadow elements within the macro pattern help to create a unique three-dimensional effect never before seen in a tactical concealment system.
Following this announcement in the coming weeks, we will post more photos as well as updates on specific A-TACS FG Camo gear being offered by our manufacturing partners in addition to specific information regarding product availability.

The next-generation AK rifle, formally referred to as the AK-200, has been named the AK-12. Its name refers to 2012, the year it will go into production. Izhmash is referring to it as the fifth generation Kalashnikov rifle.

The controls have been modified so that they are more ergonomic and can be operated by an injured solider with only one available hand. Rails have been added to make the gun compatible with modern accessories.
The AK-12 will be made available chambered in 5.45mm, 5.56mm NATO, 7.62x39mm and a new not yet named caliber. It is possible that this new caliber is the 6.5mm Grendel. Wolf Ammunition recently said they were in talks with Izhmash to produce Saiga rifles chambered in 6.5mm.
The company had said that the gas and piston system remains unchanged from the earlier AK models, but it is not clear if they are going to use the older AK-74 gas system or the newer improved AK-108 "balanced recoil" system. The AK-12 will be available in a range of sizes, including a short barreled model for Special Forces.

The Future of the Bushmaster / Remington ACR
There has been a lot of speculation about the future of the Bushmaster / Remington ACR. The rifle has not been selling well, but neither have any other non-AR-15 semi-automatic rifles. A company that supplies parts to many rifle manufactures told me today that about 70% of their business is now supplying AR-15 components. Non-AR-15 rifles are simply not selling.
Some have suggested Magpul now has the capital to start manufacturing their owns firearms.
The rights to the ACR design revert back to Magpul only if Rem/Bushmaster do not meet a minimum sales requirement. The minimum number of rifles they are required to sell is low and, I am told, they will easily meet the target. In the unlikely event Remington thought they could not meet the target, they would simply lower the price in order to increase sales.
Remington has invested a lot into the ACR. They took Magpul's prototype and turned it into a production gun. Their latest military model will be entered into the Army's carbine competition. If the ACR wins and becomes the next Army carbine the company will have a guaranteed revenue stream for the next 20 years. Consumers, LEO enforcement and foreign-militaries would all want to own the same gun used by the troops. I suspect the Freedom Group would then resume efforts to go public.
Magpul has designed a few firearms and has a powerful brand. If they wanted to, they could easily sell firearms. On the other hand, why would they produce low-margin firearms when they are selling high-margin accessories. My prediction is that they will instead start producing more and more high-end aluminum and steel rails, mounts and accessories.

$650M Five Day Opening Sales

Modern Warfare 3, Activision’s latest first-person shooter, hit store shelves like a runaway train. The game, part of the Call of Duty franchise, was predicted to be the top-selling video game despite healthy competition from EA’s Battlefield 3 released in October.
Those predictions are not just coming true, they’re being demolished. Several sources have claimed thatModern Warfare 3 is on par to break first week sales records — a title it would claim from its own predecessor,Call of Duty: Black Ops released by Activision in 2010. This, after MW3 already broke records for pre-ordered copies, according Activision.
On opening night, Activision says that approximately 1.5 million gamers lined up outside 13,000 stores to buy a copy at midnight, reported Extreme Tech. We’re not entirely sure how Activision got that number, and those gamers didn’t all necessary translate into sales. However, analysts have prediction sales that trump even those numbers. One analyst told Extreme Tech that 18 million copies will be sold by the start of the calendar year.
The site even did some quick math and found the amount of electricity used by online players was equal to or more than enough energy to power a nuclear power station.
Black Ops holds the current record for the entertainment industry’s five-day opening sales revenue record at $650 million worldwide, the Guardian reported. While hard numbers haven’t yet come in for MW3, Amazon said it generated 32% more pre-orders than Black Ops.
Celebrated games analyst Michael Pachter predicted the game will not only beat the old record but continue selling through the holiday season: “I see compression of sales for virtually every game, would bet that they are 10% higher over the same time frame, so $1.1 billion in the first six weeks,” Pachter told IndustryGamers.
Hands-On
All the hype and financial predictions are warranted, according to critics. The game has an average score of 89% on Metacritic at time of writing. We can verify that the game is a bucket of fun.
I had some time to play with it, and the game feels as great as ever. The single player campaign is littered with set-piece moments like sabotaging a submarine and fighting through New York’s financial district. While visually impressive, these moments frequently make the single player campaign feel like the user is simply watching the action instead of participating in it. Rather than focus on the shooting mechanics, MW3 pushes the user to reach the next cut-scene or vista.
We haven’t spent a ton of time on multiplayer — the real meat of the MW3 experience — but so far it plays great with a ton of perks, weapons and motivations to continue leveling up and improving your abilities. The Elite social layer helps hardcore gamers gain even more insight into how to up their game while connecting them to other users in a central hub.
MW3 is a monster of a game. It’s a blast to traipse around the world both in campaign and multiplayer, even if the surprisingly brief single-player experience can feel a little like derivative cliches on autopilot. First-person shooter fans will get far more enjoyment out of the multiplayer and co-op options. The sales are sure to follow.

Travis Haley: Disruptive Environment

Disruptive Environments
As mentioned, the Disruptive Environments course takes industry professionals that might not be otherwise exposed to the realities of the modern warfighter and gives them a glimpse into what they encounter and better understand the needs of their end user; be it peer or client.
I found the course to be a fantastic representation of a broad range of skill-sets that I typically look for in courses that I attend. While many can attend a typical multiple-day shooting course, I’ve been drawn more and more to courses that step outside of this mold as the Disruptive Environments course did.

Chris Costa Resigns from Magpul Dynamics
According to the Military Times blog, Gear Scout, Chris Costa has tendered his resignation to Magpul Dynamics, effective as of year-end 2011/early 2012-ish. In case you're just tuning into the world, Magpul Dynamics is the tactical training powerhouse in which Costa played a key role developing a cult-like following in both the real steel and Airsoft realms due, in part, to a series of instructional training DVDs filmed during their live-fire shooting courses. Perhaps most notably, "The Art of the Tactical Carbine" Parts I & II, which feature The Beard along with former-Magpul Dynamics CEO, Travis Haley, instructing students on the most effective ways to dispatch a threat using veryexpensive tricked-out M4 carbine rifles.
Apparently, Costa and his beard plan to start their own training school, Costa Ludus, which should allow him a bit more flexibility in his tactical enlightenment schedule to spend more time with his family. Also according the Gear Scout report, Costa appears to be leaving on good terms with Magpul, which is always something I hope for. I'm not a fan of drama.
As a little knowledge treat for you, the term "Ludus," according to the all-knowing Wikipedia, stems from Ancient Rome, with several meanings. One of which refers to a training school for gladiatorsand the other? Erotic role-playing. I couldn't make that up if I tried. My guess is Costa was going for the former meaning, rather than the latter. However, I know that he can be quite the character at times, so perhaps I might be wrong. Either way, I think I can speak for many of the Magpul maniacs out there when I say that we wish him well on his new endeavors.
