Colt MK12 Mod1 SPR (Special Purpose Rifle) Background

The MK12 MOD1 SPR (Special Purpose Rifle) was originally conceived by USSOCOM as part of its SOPMOD (Special Operations Peculiar Modification) program, and is a heavily modified light sniper variation of the AR-15/M16 range line of weapons.
SPR originally stood for Special Purpose Receiver, but it was changed to Special Purpose Rifle as it became a stand-alone weapons system instead of simply an add-on upper receiver assembly. The SPR was eventually type classified by USSOCOM as the MK12, and adopted by the US Navy Seals in 2002. It has also been used extensively by the US Marines and Special Forces in Iraq and Afghanistan for a wide variety of special missions and operations.
