Christ Costa 1/6 Figure

The story began with a joke. Someone posts a pic of an action figure on a forum and says it looks like Costa. Yeah it was funny, but that was it…

…until the guys at Black Ops Toys saw it and it a bulb went off. They are a distributor forCaltek International, the makers of all sorts of highly accurate and collectable figures. They approached Chris Costa with the idea of making him into a limited edition 1/6th scale version of The Trainer.

The origin of the “joke” was traced back to an action figure enthusiasts forum calledonesixthwarriors.com where “Cpl Ho” originally posted a kitbash of a “MAGPUL DYNAMICS Tactical Carbine Instructor.” So “kitbashing” –seems it’s a hobby based around sourcing or making tiny clothes and gear to outfit accurate 1/6th action figures making accurate depictions of existing people or career fields. Cpl Ho made this one from an existing 1/6th figure that sorta resembled Costa and kitted it out with clothing and equipment to complete the look, all the way down to Magpul patches he made himself.

Caltek makes figures that represent all different aspects of the military experience and one area of service that they had yet to call attention to was the role of those from the private sector that give our military members the tools to fight and survive.

Costa’s aware that people are going to have mixed reactions when they hear about him being made into an action figure. “It’s not like they are making me as a navy seal or something, I’m being represented exactly as I am; as a trainer”
“Who could say no,” said Costa during an interview this afternoon, “Anyone that knows me, knows that I am just a big kid and this was just to much to pass up.”

Costa tells me that although he’s flattered to have been chosen as the subject for this figure, he’s most excited for his kids and his parents to see him as an action figure. “I know I gave my folks hell when I was in school and my dad was pissed when I got out of the Coast Guard.” But, seeing his son turned into an action figure should make him proud of what his son has grown into and done for his country.

It’s surreal, he says, to see himself in perfect 1/6th scale all the way down to the scar on his forehead he got from a childhood accident. “I have not taken the pants off my own figure,” he says, “I feel like I’m touching something real. I’d rather dress my kids.”

The figure is fully kitted just like Chris Costa in real life. The detail is incredible all the way down to the fuzzy lining and working zippers on his fleece to the logos on the gear he’s wearing. He’s outfitted with an Arc’teryx Hyllus hoody, Arc’teryx Raider pants, Oakley LSA boots, a Costa Ludus long sleeve T-shirt, an Ares Gear Ranger Belt with a Raven Concealment Phantom holster, and because occupational safety matters, Oakley Flak Jackets with VR28 lenses and MSA-Sordin Earpro.

Caltek is still a few months from finishing the entire project; they are still working on a few things like Costa’s Nighthawk 1911 and a Larue OBR Hybrid rifle. But, the figure will be up for preorder sometime next week.
